Radio-mm-FIR Photometric Redshifts for (sub-)mm Galaxies

چکیده
We present a comparison between the published optical, IR and CO spectroscopic redshifts of 86 (sub-)mm galaxies and their photometric redshifts as derived from long-wavelength (radio–mm–FIR) photometric data. The redshift accuracy measured for 13 sub-mm galaxies with at least one robustlydetermined colour in the radio–mm–FIR regime and additional constraining upper limits is ∆z ≈ 0.30. This accuracy degrades to ∆z ≈ 0.65 when only the 1.4GHz/850μm spectral index is used, as derived from the analysis of a subsample of 58 galaxies with robustly determined redshifts. Despite the wide range of spectral energy distributions in the local galaxies that are used in an un-biased manner as templates, this analysis demonstrates that photometric redshifts can be efficiently derived for sub-mm galaxies with a precision of ∆z < 0.5 using only the rest-frame FIR to radio wavelength data, sufficient to guide the tuning of broad-band heterodyne observations (e.g. 100m GBT, 50m LMT, ALMA) or aid their determination in the case of a single line detection by these experiments.

Confirmation of the effectiveness of sub-mm source redshift estimation based on rest-frame radio–FIR photometry
We present a comparison between the published optical, IR and CO spectroscopic redshifts of 15 (sub-)mm galaxies and their photometric redshifts as derived from longwavelength (radio–mm–FIR) photometric data. The redshift accuracy measured for 12 sub-mm galaxies with at least one robustly-determined colour in the radio–mm–FIR regime is δz ≈ 0.30 (r.m.s.). Despite the wide range of spectral ener...
متن کاملConstraints on the Accuracy of Photometric Redshifts Derived from BLAST and Herschel/SPIRE Sub-mm Surveys
More than 150 galaxies have been detected in blank-field millimetre and sub-millimetre surveys. However the redshift distribution of sub-mm galaxies remains uncertain due to the difficulty in identifying their optical-IR counterparts, and subsequently obtaining their spectroscopic emission-line redshifts. In this paper we discuss results from a Monte-Carlo analysis of the accuracy with which on...
متن کاملRadio-to-FIR Spectral Energy Distribution and Photometric Redshifts for Dusty Starburst Galaxies
As a logical next step in improving the radio-to-submm spectral index as a redshift indicator (Carilli & Yun), we have investigated a technique of using the entire radio-to-FIR spectral energy distribution (SED) for deriving photometric redshifts for dusty starburst galaxies at high redshift. A dusty starburst SED template is developed from theoretical understanding on various emission mechanis...
متن کاملOptical and Near-infrared Properties of Submillimetre Galaxies in the Goods- North Field
We investigate the photometric redshift distribution, colours and morphologies of a large sample of submillimetre sources in the GOODS-North region. With the depth achieved by the deep ACS images, optical counterparts have been found for all the radio-detected sub-mm sources, and we have used several techniques to identify counterparts to the radio-undetected sources. The sub-mm counterparts ha...
متن کامل350μm observations of local IRAS galaxies using SHARC-II
The cosmologically significant population of dusty galaxies detected at sub-mm and mm wavelengths by SCUBA and MAMBO have played a central part in many of the discussions at this workshop. Obtaining their redshifts is critical in understanding their role in galaxy formation and evolution, but this is a challenging task. Nevertheless, Chapman et al. [1] have made significant progress by obtainin...
